How to use the chmod calculator

Check read, write and execute for the owner, group and others. Each role becomes one octal digit (read 4, write 2, execute 1), so 7 means all three and 0 means no access. The symbolic form and a copy-ready chmod command update as you click.

Octal and symbolic modes

Directories need execute permission to be entered, so 755 is the usual mode for web roots and 644 for regular files. Avoid 777: it lets any local user modify the file. Set the setuid, setgid and sticky bits deliberately, and remember that ACLs and SELinux labels can grant access that the mode bits do not show.
